The MLA International Bibliography covers scholarship in a broad range of humanities disciplines related to global literatures, languages and all forms of human communication. It includes books, journals, and web sites published in more than 100 countries and in more than 50 languages covering literary theory and criticism, dramatic arts (film, television, video, theater, radio, opera), folklore, linguistics, rhetoric and composition, college-level teaching of literature, language and writing, and history of printing and publishing.

Produced by the Modern Language Association (MLA), the electronic version of the bibliography dates back to the 1920s. The database contains millions of citations as well as full text for 1,000 journals.

Simultaneous use of e-books in your course

By Marian Papavoine

Dear lecturer,

Using e-books as compulsory literature for example in Blackboard or the Electronic Study Guide would seem like the perfect solution to give all students access to the necessary literature for your course. In practice, publishers often limit access to their e-books to a specific number of users, most commonly to one or three users at a time. Publishers may also limit the number of pages that can be printed or saved.

The subject librarians of LIS can possible help you avoid these accessibility issues. If you are planning to use an e-book in your course, email them the proposed title (use the email address Lis-collectiespecialisten@lists.uvt.nl) and they will check whether access problems to this e-book could arise and, if so, find technical solutions.

Background

Recently, the library received many notifications that students were trying to access an e-book, but that the maximum capacity had been reached. As a result, students were unable to access this particular e-book. It showed as “unavailable” in the catalog for seven days.

For this particular book, the library had purchased a 3-user license because the publisher did not offer licenses for multiple or unlimited users. What the library can do to work around this limitation is limit the download options to “one day” or give the advice to download and share chapters.

Abonnement op Nature

By Paul van Waelsden

Nature omslag

to place before the general public the grand results of Scientific Work and Scientific Discovery ; and to urge the claims of Science to a more general recognition in Education and in Daily Life.

————-

As from November staff and students have access again to the general scientific journal Nature.

The license for Nature was cancelled in January 2015 due to a deficit of the scientific information budget. Now there is financial headroom again to re-establish a subscription to Nature.
The subscription was re-established because of continued interest in Nature from our reseachers. Initially the subscription to Nature runs for one year. All volumes from the year 2014 onwards are available.

The mission statement from 1869 says that Nature intends first of all:
to place before the general public the grand results of Scientific Work and Scientific Discovery ; and to urge the claims of Science to a more general recognition in Education and in Daily Life.”

Abonnement op Science

By Paul van Waelsden
